Who among us hasn’t kept some coins from the old lire? A little out of affection for our beloved old coin, but also a little in the hope that with the passage of time the preserved coins could increase in value for collectors.
The lira was the official currency of Italy from 1861 until February 28, 2002, when the euro finally came into force.
Old lire worth a fortune
Although we can no longer use the old lira for shopping, it is good to know that some of these coins have become very coveted for collectors and could be worth a small fortune. Let’s see which are the most precious.
We assume that to have a value for collectors, the coins in question must meet these two requirements:
- be rare
- be kept in good condition otherwise their value drops significantly.
-
Let’s start with the coin of 1 lira, the one with the orange branch on one side and the head decorated with ears on the other: the 1 lira coin of 1947 comes to have a value of 1500 euros.
Another coin from 1947, but this time the 2 lire coin with the ear of corn: that of this specific vintage if well preserved can be worth up to 1800 euro.
The coin of 5 read with the bunch of grapes (the first of this nominal value) of 1946 can be worth up to 1200 euro: in this case we are talking about a coin made in Italma one of the many alloys used by the State Mint.
Another coin from 5 read that can be worth a small fortune is the one with the dolphin: if dated 1955 and perfectly preserved, it is valid until 2000 euro (of this coin only 400 thousand copies were minted and for this reason they are rare).
Let’s move on to the 10 read that many will remember, it is the 10 lire with the olive branch. If well preserved and del 1947 their value comes to 4000 euro.
As for the 50 read with the god Vulcan, those who accompanied us until 2002, if you have a copy of the 1956 in good condition the value reaches up to 2000 euros. Same coin but del 1958 the value, also in this case, can reach up to 2000 euro.
Less value, however, to the 100 read: those minted in 1955 if in perfect conditions they reach a value of 1000 euro.
What are you waiting to see if you have any preserved?
