“Old Burgas through the eyes of Dr. Melkonyan”

Old Burgas

The exhibition “Old Burgas through the eyes of Dr. Melkonyan” will be opened on May 15, 2024 (Wednesday) at 5:00 pm in the Ethnographic Museum (69 Slavyanska Street). It presents Burgas iconic places, events, known and unknown people from that romantic and at the same time dynamic, colorful and recognizable city.

The interesting moments of life at that time – words from the manuscript of Dr. Magardich Stepan Melkonyan “Burgas – my native city. Memories of the time from 1930 to 1945” are supported by photos, documents and relevant exhibits from the funds of the Burgas Museum, from the family and personal archives of the citizens of Burgas, as well as donated by the heirs of Dr. Melkonyan.

The exhibition also tells about Magardich Melkonyan himself – an Armenian, born in Burgas in January 1922, shoemaker, doctor, who described Burgas in detail and diligently, methodically and lovingly in the past.

Old Burgas

“My wish is that after the reading, the most vivid picture of reality will appear…” – he shared.

It seems strange to us today, but he edited and rewrote his memoirs fourteen times in his own hand! Fourteen thick notebooks, carefully written to know, to remember. Two of the manuscripts were personally donated by the “Ethnography” department and the “History” department at the Regional History Museum in Burgas.
The exhibition is part of a project with the same name by RIM – Burgas, approved and financed by the Ministry of Culture.

In June this year, the official presentation of the book – the manuscript, which will be published by the museum, is coming.
