The issue of the ninth series of banknotes has been completed since the Swiss National Bank (SNB) presented the new CHF 100 note in September 2019. The SNB now wants to withdraw the previous eighth banknote series.

It intends to communicate the legally required recall of the notes of the old series two months in advance, in the first semester of the coming year 2021, it said in a communiqué on Friday. Until the recall, the notes would continue to be considered legal tender and could continue to be used without restriction.

Exchange possible after call back

In contrast to the past, the old banknotes no longer expire after this recall. Although they lose their legal tender status, they can be exchanged indefinitely. After the recall, however, only at the cash desk of the SNB in Bern and Zurich and at the SNB agencies.

In the past, banknotes always always lost their value after the recall. The National Council and the Council of States abolished this regulation last year. The unlimited exchange now applies from the sixth series, which was put into circulation in 1976.
