Old-age provision concerns Swiss people

For 18% of the Swiss electorate, the most pressing need for political action in 2020 affects retirement provision, according to the latest online survey from Vimentis. In 2nd and 3rd position, we find asylum policy (14%) and climate change (12%).

Climate change is on the Swiss political agenda. Last year, it was still ninth, can be read Wednesday in a press release from Vimentis. At the same time, Swiss satisfaction with politics in general has dropped in one year, from 2% to 36%.

Need to act

Returning to the environment, 62% of Swiss citizens believe that political action is necessary due to climate change, continues Vimentis. Switzerland is expected to halve its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared to 1990 levels, say almost 45% of them, in accordance with the Paris Climate Convention.

About the same proportion (43%) is in favor of the introduction of a CO2 tax for businesses. And half of the Swiss electorate (50%) is opposed to a ban on internal combustion engines by 2050, against 37% who are in favor.

The ban on short-haul flights, on the other hand, is supported in principle by 49% of the Swiss electorate, practically on par with the opponents of this measure, at 48%.

Better integrate refugees

The asylum policy also worries the Swiss. Almost 62% of those surveyed are not satisfied with Switzerland’s current policy in this sector. A clear majority of 54% want additional measures to be taken to integrate refugees admitted temporarily and recognized in the labor market.

Some 43% believe that businesses should not receive financial incentives to accept temporarily admitted refugees. Therefore, they should be paid like domestic workers, with comparable qualifications.

Finally, a slim majority of 47% of the Swiss electorate believe that they pay too much tax compared to the services provided by the State. And not far from half of the respondents (49%) believe that their salary is fair compared to that of other people in Switzerland.

The individual taxation of spouses still attracts 67% of the Swiss electorate. In another area, almost 70% of those polled are in favor of the unemployed being obliged to carry out community service in order to be able to benefit from social assistance and unemployment benefits.

Online survey

21,736 people participated in the online survey from November 13 to January 18. Vimentis’s results accurately represent the 2019 percentages of votes (National Council elections) for parties with a maximum margin of error of +/- 4%.

Vimentis was created in 2003 by students from the University of St. Gallen. Carried out once a year, it aims to be politically neutral and is under the patronage of the presidents of the parties of the Greens, the PS, the PLR, the PBD, the PDC, the PVL and the SVP.
