Last June, Olcay’s first great love passed away: James Harris. “Somewhere I saw it coming ten years ago. James was a difficult man, had a history with drugs,” Olcay explains in &C. Ruud and Olcay had just returned from their first vacation together when the news reached her. “It went exactly as I expected and the pain was also as I expected. That is the most difficult thing about life, that it is part of it.”

The news hit her so hard that she lost herself completely. Olcay: “Ruud was quite rigorous: we would now put a line under it, and then everyone should know. I was not interested in that at all. I was sad, and then I also got the bullshit with the media (…) If it happened now, it would be very different. “
According to Ruud, he had ‘failed’ at the time, but the designer did not want to bother him with her problems. “I think it’s good that we broke up. I learned a lot from that. Looking back on it now, I would have done things differently,” said Olcay. “It was perhaps the most educational thing in my life,” agrees Ruud, who initially had no hope that it would be all right again. “Sometimes you have to put your ego aside and just be there for someone.”
