Scholz met with UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who also participated in the signing and “welcomed” the energy security agreement, WAM added.
The agreement foresees LNG exports to Germany by the end of 2022, followed by deliveries of additional quantities in 2023.
The WAM news agency reported a direct delivery of diesel this month and an agreement to supply 250,000 tons of diesel per month in 2023.
Under the agreement, the UAE will provide “a cargo of LNG to be delivered in late 2022 and used to commission the German LNG floating terminal at the North Sea port of Brunsbüttel.
UAE state oil company ADNOC made its first direct diesel delivery to Germany this month and “will supply up to 250,000 tons of diesel per month in 2023,” according to the same source.
The German leader began a tour of the Gulf states yesterday from Saudi Arabia in hopes of concluding new energy deals to replace Russian supplies and alleviate the energy crisis triggered by Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
During his visit to Abu Dhabi, Scholz stressed that it is very important not to rely on one energy supplier, but on as many suppliers as possible. Dependence on a supplier “certainly won’t happen again,” the Federal Chancellor said from DPA.
The UAE has the seventh largest natural gas reserve in the world.
During his visit, the chancellor planted a tree in a mangrove park today and symbolically paid attention to the environment, the Associated Press reported.
Later today, Scholz left for gas-rich Qatar to meet Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
