An Ecuadorian court of justice accepted this Friday the tax appeal to the innocence of the Swedish computer scientist Ola Bini (friend of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange), processed by illegal access to state computer systemsand sentenced him to one year in prison and a fine of $1,840.

The State Prosecutor’s Office, in a message from its X network account, indicated that an Appeals Chamber revoked the state of innocence issued by another court of justice in January 2022 and convicted the computer scientist.

«With a majority vote, the Appeals Chamber accepts the request of the Prosecutor’s Office, revokes the sentence that confirmed his state of innocence and declares the defendant guilty of the crime of attempted non-consensual access to a computer system.«.

“With this sentence, the judges impose a one-year custodial sentence and order the payment of a fine of four unified basic salaries”which totals 1,840 dollars.

Bini, at the beginning of last March, had already noticed an alleged lack of impartiality in the appeals court, as he said that it was the same one that five years ago denied him freedom when he was serving a provisional detention order.

This led to the arrest of the Australian founder of WikiLeaks in the United Kingdom, also subject to a request from the United States to be extradited to that country, where he would face charges for having leaked classified information that endangered intelligence agents of the Washington Government.

The Ecuadorian Prosecutor’s Office had accused Bini on suspicion that he had accessed the system of the state-owned National Telecommunications Corporation without authorization.s (CNT) with the aim of trying obtain information on the digital content of the platforms of the oil company Petroecuador and the former National Intelligence Secretariat.

However, Bini’s defense, which has emphatically denied the charges, criticized the prosecutor’s action and denounced a series of irregularities in the process that should have taken place in 2019, but which was suspended repeatedly. EFE
