Oklahoma passes law to ban abortion from the start of pregnancy | News Univision United States

The Lower House of the state of Oklahoma ratified this Thursday a law that will prohibit any abortion from the moment of fertilization and that it will take effect as soon as it is signed by the governor, Republican Kevin Stitt, who has already made it clear that he would sign any restriction on abortion that came to his table.

With the ratification by the governor, this law would become the most restrictive anti-abortion law in the country, in the midst of controversy over the leaking of the draft of a Supreme Court ruling that would revoke the federal protection of this reproductive right, the ruling Roe vs. Wade.

oklahoma law prohibits any abortion except when the life of the mother is in danger, or when the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest.

In a statement, White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre called the initiative the “most extreme effort” undertaken to date by a state to restrict the right to abortion. Jean-Pierre added that the initiative is part of an offensive against abortion rights promoted by “ultra MAGA politicians”, the slogan of Donald Trump’s campaign and presidency, from the acronym of his slogan ‘Make America Great Again (Make America Great Again).

Abortion restrictions already in place in Oklahoma

Oklahoma already has a law in place that, like Texas, prohibits abortions from the first six weeks of pregnancy.

In addition, another regulation signed by the governor in April and that will take effect this summer prohibits any interruption of pregnancy, only to save the life of the mother.

Several Republican states, including Oklahoma, have also prepared “spring laws” that will come into force when the Supreme Court’s final ruling is known, which will occur in mid-summer.

Although the Supreme Court has clarified that the draft leaked to the press is not “definitive”, everything indicates that the country’s main judicial instance will rule against the famous ruling ‘Roe vs. Wade’, which since 1973 protects the right to terminate pregnancy at the federal level. If this happens, the states that wish to do so will have free rein to approve abortion vetoes in their territory.
