NORMAN, Okla. — Over 1,000 Oklahomans converged on Norman Wednesday, united by a shared commitment to improving mental health care. The Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS) hosted its annual Momentum Conference, marking the first time the event reached full capacity.
The conference, held at the Embassy Suites Convention Center Hotel, saw such high demand that some attendees had to stand due to a lack of available seating. Organizers viewed this as a positive sign, reflecting the growing importance placed on mental well-being.
Healthcare professionals gathered for the three-day event, which featured 70 diverse breakout sessions. Attendees expressed enthusiasm for the knowledge gained, especially in areas like self-care.
“You can’t pour out if you don’t have anything to pour,” Tiffany Swango said. “So really take breaks, focus on your mental health and make sure you’re staying positive.”
Jayci enerson, a seasoned attendee of the conference, highlighted the valuable insights she gained regarding youth prevention systems.
“It was really informative just looking at ways that we can empower youth to help us build our future, so it’s not solely dependent on us,” Enerson said.
Curt Rawls, representing ODMHSAS, attributed the record turnout to the increasing recognition of mental health’s significance. “The namesake of the conference,” Rawls said. “Lots of momentum happening in the building. Post-pandemic mental health care in general has reached a higher caliber of need and value.People see that, and we want to support it.”
Enerson, attending the conference for the eighth time, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the growing awareness of mental health needs in Oklahoma.
“I think it just speaks to the heart we have here in Oklahoma,” Enerson said. “More and more people are recognizing the need for mental health and prevention. It’s just reassuring to see that this many people really care about it, and want to make the state better.”
The Momentum Conference continued on thursday, December 5th, and concluded on Friday, December 6th.
