Oklahoma Department of Transportation Prepares for Massive Crowds Ahead of Total Solar Eclipse
In just a few weeks, the southeastern part of Oklahoma will become a hub of excitement as thousands of people flock to witness the highly anticipated total solar eclipse on April 8th. With such a massive influx of visitors expected, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring that the roads can handle the crowds.
Executive Director Tim Gatz shared some insights into the preparations being made by ODOT. “We’re putting out some additional portable cameras so we’ll have some live visuals, that will help us and also help the traveling public,” he explained. These cameras will provide real-time updates on the traffic situation, allowing both ODOT and drivers to make informed decisions. Additionally, changeable message boards will be strategically placed at key locations, particularly in District 2, to provide essential information to motorists.
To ensure smooth traffic flow, Gatz revealed that ODOT has studied how other states have managed similar events in the past. One of the challenges they anticipate is the simultaneous exodus of visitors once the eclipse concludes. “We’re looking at pausing maintenance activities and taking a hard look at our construction projects to make sure we can optimize traffic flow out of the area,” Gatz stated. By minimizing roadwork during this period, ODOT aims to prevent any unnecessary congestion and delays.
Recognizing the rarity of such an event, ODOT is leaving no stone unturned in its preparations. “This doesn’t happen often, so ODOT is doing everything it can to prepare,” Gatz emphasized. The primary goal is to ensure the safety of everyone involved. Gatz urged drivers to turn on their headlights and avoid stopping on the highway during the eclipse. He warned that once traffic queues build up, it can take hours for them to clear, exacerbating the already challenging conditions in the area.
In an effort to enhance communication with drivers, ODOT encourages everyone to download the Drive OK app. Through this app, ODOT will be able to provide real-time updates and important information to motorists. This will undoubtedly prove invaluable in keeping everyone informed and ensuring a smooth and safe experience for all.
As the date of the total solar eclipse draws near, excitement continues to build in Oklahoma. With the Oklahoma Department of Transportation taking proactive measures to handle the anticipated crowds, visitors can rest assured that their journey to witness this awe-inspiring celestial event will be as seamless as possible. Remember, safety should be the top priority, so follow ODOT’s advice, stay informed through the Drive OK app, and get ready for an unforgettable experience under the darkened skies of Oklahoma.
