In response to the U.S. Navy’s missile destroyer Rafael Peralta planning to call at Ishigaki Port in Ishigaki City, Okinawa Prefecture, a full-scale strike is planned at Naha Port and Ishigaki Port from the 11th to ensure the safety of workers. On the 11th, the Okinawa Regional Headquarters of the All Japan Port Workers’ Union (All Ports and Harbors) (executive chairman Junichi Yamaguchi, approximately 1,000 members) held a press conference together with the Okinawa Harbor Transport Association in Minato-cho, Naha City, and from 1 p.m. The company announced that it would cancel its planned strike at Naha Port. Regarding the strike at Ishigaki Port, the union and the Port Transport Association have requested talks with the Ishigaki City Port Division, but as the outlook remains uncertain, the strike will proceed as scheduled from 1:00 p.m.

The decision to end the strike at Naha Port was based on the fact that, during talks that began at 10 a.m. on the 11th, they were able to once again share the understanding that “ensuring the safety and security of port workers is a common desire between labor and management.”

Chairman Yamaguchi said that following the U.S. military minesweeper in September last year, a guided missile destroyer is about to call at Ishigaki Port, saying, “I am concerned that our workplaces will be used for military purposes.” .

During the discussion that began at 10:00 a.m., in response to the National Federation of Longshoremen’s Union’s request to “take all measures to prevent ports from becoming military bases” in 2023, the Japan Harbor Transport Association stated “A desire for peace.” The industry side completely agrees with this, and there is no room for disagreement.” He confirmed that the same would be followed in Okinawa. Chairman Yamaguchi praised the industry, saying, “The industry has responded in good faith.” (Yugo Okita)
