A real Antwerp resident, although he looks very exotic, has died: okapi Bondo (20) died in the Zoo. He fathered Hakima, Jabari, Qira and Ubundu.

Antwerp Zoo is the international studbook keeper of okapis and coordinates the breeding program at European level. In fact, 49 okapis have been born in the Antwerp Zoo since 1919. The okapi is related to the giraffe and is only found in the wild in the northeast of Congo.
Bondo was one of those okapis born in Antwerp and passed away this week. He was also very productive within the breeding program and produced four offspring. In August the Zoo congratulated Bondo on his 20th birthday. The stripes of the okapis are also reflected in the Zoo logo.
