“Ok administration up to 65 years”

The circular of the Ministry of Health which raises the age of those who can receive the vaccine anti-Covid on AstraZeneca. The decision was taken after the opinion of the Commission of the Italian Medicines Agency (Aifa) and, as the circular specifies, comes “from new scientific evidence that reports vaccine efficacy estimates higher than those previously reported”. The anti-Covid vaccine produced by AstraZeneca can be used “In the age group between 18 and 65 (cohort 1956), with the exception of extremely vulnerable subjects”. The circular is signed by the Director General for Prevention of the dicastery, Gianni Rezza.

Following the circular ‘Update of vaccines available against Sars-CoV-2 / Covid-19 and clarifications on informed consent’ – reads – following the opinion of the Technical-Scientific Commission of the Italian Medicines Agency Aifa, and the subsequent clarifications of the Higher Council of Health, therefore indicates “the possibility of using the Covid-19 vaccine ‘Vaccine AstraZeneca’ in the age group between 18 and 65 years (cohort 1956), with the exception of extremely vulnerable subjects”.

“These indications, according to the permanent working group on Sars-CoV-2 – it is explained in the text – are reinforced by new scientific evidence that reports vaccine efficacy estimates higher than those previously reported, and immunogenicity data in older subjects at the age of 55, as well as new international recommendations including the opinion of the Sage group (Strategic Advisory Group of Experts, ed) of the WHO ”, the World Health Organization.

“Therefore, in relation to category 6 of the document ‘Ad interim recommendations on the target groups of anti-Sars-CoV-2 / Covid-19 vaccination, update February 8, 2021′”, that is, people aged between 18 and 54 years without conditions that increase clinical risk, the new circular indicates that the AstraZenca vaccine “can be offered up to age 65 (cohort 1956), including those with conditions that may increase the risk of developing severe forms of Covid-19, without that connotation of gravity reported for people defined as extremely vulnerable. This – specifies the ministry – pending the updating of the aforementioned document ».
