Orenthal James Simpson, known as OJ Simpson, born July 9, 1947 in San Francisco, is an American professional American football player and film actor.
Winner of the Heisman Trophy in 1968 at the end of his college career with the USC Trojans, the running back was selected first overall in the 1969 NFL draft by the Buffalo Bills. After signing the most lucrative contract for an American football player at the time, Simpson struggled during his first three seasons in the National Football League (NFL). From the 1972 season onwards, he distinguished himself as one of the best runners in history. He racked up more than 1,000 yards in the season. The following year, he was the first player in history to pass the 2,000 yards rushing mark in a single season. For this performance, OJ Simpson was named best player of the season.
Selected five times for the Pro Bowl and on the best team of the year between 1972 and 1976, OJ Simpson was part of the best team of the 1970s. He ended his career with the San Francisco 49ers in 1978 and 1979. Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1983 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985, Simpson is one of the best players in history at his position. After his retirement from sports, he became an actor and sports commentator.
OJ Simpson is also known for having been accused of murdering his former wife Nicole Brown, and her friend, Ronald Goldman, in 1994. Following a controversial and highly publicized criminal trial, he was acquitted in 1995 of various criminal charges. He was then found civilly liable in 1997 and had to pay an amount of $33.5 million. Arrested in 2007 on charges of armed robbery and kidnapping, he was sentenced to 33 years in prison the following year. He was released on October 1, 2017, after nine years in prison and on December 1, 2021, at his request, his conditional release measures were lifted early.
