Prostate cancer victim: OJ Simpson died at age 76
American football icon will be remembered for the media trial in which he was accused of double murder.
OJ Simpson, former American football icon accused of killing his ex-wife, whose trial became a media spectacle, died this Wednesday, aged 76, a victim of prostate cancer. On social network X, the children said that their father left surrounded by his family.
Known as ‘The Juice’, OJ Simpson became one of the best North American Football League (NFL) players of his generation. “I’m not black, I’m OJ”, used to say the former ‘running back’, who despite his impressive career in sport, which he abandoned in 1979, will always be remembered for the ‘trial of the century’, in which he was responsible for the double murder of his ex -wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and friend Ronald Goldman.
On June 17, 1994, OJ Simpson forced police to chase his white Ford Bronco at 60 km/hour on the roads of Los Angeles for two hours. The chase was accompanied by thousands of people who on the side of the road waved and shouted: “The Juice is loose”. Al Cowlings, a friend of the former athlete, was driving the vehicle, while OJ, in the back seat, threatened to commit suicide with a gun. The former athlete was arrested that day and, a year later, after a controversial trial watched on TV by around 150 million people (57% of the USA), the jury declared him innocent. The doubt, however, remains.
In 2007, OJ fell from grace again, when he was sentenced to 33 years in prison for armed robbery and kidnapping. He was paroled ten years later.
Relationship marked by violence
Orenthal James Simpson married Marguerite Whitley in 1967, when he was just 19 years old. The couple had three children: Arnelle, 55, Jason, 53, and Aaren, who drowned in the pool at the age of two. The couple divorced in 1979 when OJ was already dating German Nicole Brown, aged 20. Together they had Sydney, aged 38, and Justin, aged 35, but the relationship was marked by episodes of domestic violence.
