Oil Tanker Caught Fire After Houthi Rocket Attack off Yemen Coast: Latest Updates

Jan 26, 2024 at 10:26 PM Update: an hour ago

An oil tanker caught fire after a rocket hit off the coast of Yemen on Friday. Operator Trafigura reports this to the BBC. The Houthis previously claimed to have fired a missile at a vessel. The crew would be safe.

“The safety of the crew is our top priority,” a Trafigura spokesperson told the newspaper BBC. According to the company, military ships are en route to the British oil tanker.

A naval ship in the area is also said to have responded to a distress call from the ship earlier. There would be no injuries. “We remain in contact with the ship and are closely monitoring the situation.”

According to the spokesperson, the fire is burning in a cargo tank on the starboard side. Firefighting equipment on board is used to extinguish it.

It is probably the British oil tanker Marlin Luanda. The ship was hit in the Gulf of Aden. The Houthis say they used several rockets to target the oil tanker.

The Houthis have increasingly attacked ships with drones and missiles in the Gulf of Aden in recent months. These types of incidents also occur more often on the Red Sea. The rebels do this as a show of support for the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

At first they only attacked Israeli ships and ships to and from Israel. But since American-British attacks on the Houthis in Yemen that started two weeks ago, the rebels are also targeting ships from those countries.
