Oil Spill Threatens Venezuela as Tobago’s Coastline Stain Enters Grenada’s Waters
An environmental disaster is unfolding in the Caribbean as an oil spill from an overturned and abandoned barge threatens the coastlines of Tobago, Grenada, and potentially even neighboring Venezuela. The spill was first discovered by Trinidad and Tobago’s coastguard eight days ago, and despite efforts to contain it, the situation remains dire.
The oil stain has already traveled approximately 144km (89 miles) into the Caribbean Sea at a rate of 14km/h, entering Grenada’s territorial waters. Farley Augustine, Tobago’s chief secretary, confirmed the news after a fly-over conducted by Trinidad and Tobago’s air guard. While Augustine stated that a 40ft perimeter with booms has been established around the wreckage to control the situation, fuel continues to leak from the sunken vessel.
The inability to plug the leak is compounded by the lack of information regarding the barge’s contents and the quantity of fuel it holds. Augustine emphasized the need for accurate information to effectively address the crisis. “We are unable to move forward, except containment and skimming,” he added.
Satellite images compiled by The Guardian highlight the extensive damage caused by the spill, with large areas of Tobago’s coastline dyed black. The severity of the situation has prompted Trinidad to reach out to authorities in Grenada, Panama, Aruba, and Guyana as part of an investigation into the disaster. The barge’s owner and origin remain unknown.
In response to the crisis, officials declared a national emergency on Sunday and launched a massive cleanup effort. Venezuela’s foreign affairs ministry has also expressed concern and initiated meetings with Trinidad’s government to coordinate action. The spill poses a significant threat to Venezuela’s coastal areas if not contained promptly.
The mystery surrounding the barge deepens as officials are uncertain whether anyone was onboard when it overturned and began to sink off Tobago’s coast. The search for the tug boat and its owner is ongoing, adding to the complexity of the situation.
The oil spill has caused outrage among residents of the twin-island nation, who are demanding accountability from the barge’s owner. Augustine called on them to step forward and take responsibility for the cleanup. “We need to know the quantity and the material you were transporting, so we know what we have been dealing with, what we have been walking in, what we have been swimming in, what we have been trying to clean up from our shores,” he stated.
The national security minister, Fitzgerald Hinds, assured the public that the investigation is ongoing and expressed hope for a swift resolution. However, the urgency of the situation cannot be overstated. The spill not only poses a significant threat to marine life and ecosystems but also jeopardizes the livelihoods of those who depend on the affected coastlines for tourism and fishing.
