The incident was caused by a leak in a pipeline. That reports the British broadcaster BBC on the basis of a statement from the managers of the port, PHC.
Plan for oil spills
Reservoir fluid can contain all kinds of oil. The PHC has therefore activated its ‘oil spill response plan’ and shut down the leaking pipeline, with booms on either side of the leak.
According to PHC, companies that specialize in fighting oil spills have been called in.
It is advised not to swim in Poole Harbor or the surrounding area until further notice. “Anyone who has come into contact with the spill should wash immediately with soap and water. If the eyes have come into contact with cloudy water, they should be rinsed with water,” the PHC says.
Natural harbour
Poole Harbor is the largest natural harbor in Europe. It is a popular place for water sports and waterfowl.
The BBC reports that the situation is under control and the leakage has stopped. It is not yet known how great the consequences for nature are.
