The Ohio State University Medical Center has developed a vaccine against alcohol addiction using gene therapy, informs journal Nature Medicine.
According to the results of the report, the gene carrier, adenovirus, was used in the development of the drug. The scientists modified it to include a gene associated with alcohol addiction.
At the same time, the developed drug affected the part of the brain that is responsible for the production of dopamine. Since in people with alcohol dependence the synthesis of this hormone drops dramatically, giving up alcohol becomes a difficult process. However, the vaccine, the developers say, helps the body generate more dopamine.
In the course of work, scientists conducted an experiment on monkeys, which were first addicted to alcohol. A month after vaccination, the same primates began to refuse alcohol. According to the report, more than 90% of the experimental monkeys have lost the painful craving for alcohol – so doctors plan to begin clinical trials in humans in the near future.
