Ohio State, Michigan, Aggies und Rebels

If Ohio State welcomes the Purdue Boilermakers, they’ll go into the game as a clear 20-point favorite, according to Caesars Sportsbook. That’s a big difference between two Conference opponents ranked in November and maybe too much advance for the Buckeyes. But before that, it should be more exciting in the game between the Michigan Wolverines and Penn State Nittany Lions. Also in the night we can expect a duel at eye level when the Texas A&M Aggies meet the Ole Miss Rebels in Mississippi. It’s about a lot, if not everything, that this season means for the respective colleges.

The focus this week is once again on the Big Ten and Southeastern Conference. It is true that the Oregon Ducks (# 3) and the Oklahoma Sooners (# 8), which are ranked ahead, have to contest difficult duels against Washington State and Baylor (# 13). However, the race of the giants in the north of the country receives more attention. Playoff newcomers Purdue can annoy another favorite and can then no longer be wiped off the card of the contenders for good. Michigan hasn’t won the game at Penn State either. Until then, there is another lead-off in the SEC for first place behind Alabama, which becomes important the moment the Crimson Tide loses to Auburn in the Iron Bowl. So the Aggies and Rebels still have realistic playoff hopes.

Head coaches Jim Harbaugh and James Franklin meet for the seventh time. They are currently 3-3 in comparison, both of which have already celebrated two away wins for Michigan and Penn State.

Harbaugh’s Wolverines won convincingly against Indiana last week, but it was only the second time that they scored less than 30 points this year. The Nittany Lions, on the other hand, broke their recent loss streak of three consecutive losses and are pleased with the recovery of their quarterback Sean Clifford. Penn State is out of the playoff race for good, but would love to tip the scales and shoot out more contenders with wins.

Michigan’s Edge Defender Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo are the strongest Pass Rush duo in college football. In nine missions, the two come together on 14 sacks. It is not uncommon for them to achieve these necessary stops in tricky situations shortly before the end of the game. Persistent and athletic, whereby Ojabo even has the greater scope for development here, they gain more experience from week to week in order to be able to assert themselves in the NFL in the future.

With the offensive line around Left Tackle Rasheed Walker, both get a matchup in which they can present themselves to scouts. Walker is the Big Mauler type, who generates a lot of power transfer with vigorous hand use and clean footwork and shows his talent against bull rushes or in run blocking. He would have a harder time against top athletes, at least one would suspect. So this becomes an important test for Walker as well.

Ojabo and Hutchinson are not to be stopped the whole game. In addition, the Michigan offense is able to score more often and control the game with the run. Penn State may have the most explosive playmaker in college football in Jahan Dotson, but that alone won’t be enough.

#19 Purdue Boilermakers @ #4 Ohio State Buckeyes

Ohio State has to win the game and, in addition to the home factor, also has good arguments. But they are not a 20-point favorite, as the bookmakers claim. The Buckeyes were already closer than expected in their last two encounters against Nebraska and Penn State. Even if they both won and that is what ultimately counts, we can expect a close game against Purdue.

Because the Boilermakers arrive with perhaps the most talented team they have ever had. Edge Defender George Karlaftis III has not been playing football long and was actually only able to be recruited by the Boilermakers for that reason. The Greek is an extremely well-developed athlete. His special move is the one in which he fakes a speed rush around the corner and then quickly goes through the inside as soon as the offensive tackle reveals his inner shoulder. We see something like that on Sundays, especially from Khalil Mack.

Left tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere and Guard Thayer Munford need to be well prepared for such actions. You will, like previous opponents, take him back to doubles teams, as the rest of the Pass Rush of Purdue has a much lower penetrative power. This and Karlaftis’ lack of experience explain his only 2.5 sacks on his credit side.

Purdue’s wealth of talent is not limited to defense. Your greatest playmaker can be found in the offense. Wide receiver David Bell is in no way behind his competitors in terms of success, statistics and awards in terms of position in the upcoming draft. In the latest edition TOUCHDOWN24 – The American Football Magazine you can find out more about his career and his special qualities.

Bell will be well prepared for his matchup against Sevyn Banks and will try to prove that despite the presence of Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson on the Buckeyes side, he is the best receiver on the field. Banks supplies him with the caliber to cornerback, which will probably also await him in the NFL. Athletic, well trained and very vigilant.

This game is narrower than the betting providers specify. For the experienced warriors in the ranks of the Ohio State Buckeyes, however, it is considered a revenge game and the danger of a trap game for Chris Olave and Co. is therefore not given. The last meeting in 2018 was won by the Boilermakers with 49-20. Looking to make amends, the favorite should just win and further consolidate their playoff position with another win over a team ranked in the top 25.

Other draft prospects: Ohio State Buckeyes WR Chris Olave, WR Garrett Wilson, Edge Zach Harrison

#11 Texas A&M Aggies @ #15 Ole Miss Rebels

There’s a lot going on on the weekend. Both teams are waiting for the playoffs and both have a good chance of one of the great New Year’s Six Bowls. At least the winner of this lot.

Texas A&M manages 5.43 yards per run this year. They are currently successful against absolute top run defenses from Auburn and Mississippi State. Ole Miss should also be prepared for the fact that Isaiah Spiller will be difficult to stop and therefore has to use the few drives to score.

for Rebels Quarterback Matt Corral It is therefore important not only to get the well-lubricated machine of his offense going, but also to lead it through the game without switching and creaking gears. Corral has excellent facilities. He is athletic and can attack the entire field with different throws. He uses it to first check the requirements of NFL scouts. His game this year is no longer as prone to errors as in previous years. Now let’s see if he can not only play nice and clean, but also appear as a winner in important games. He didn’t show it against Alabama.

Now it’s all about Texas A&M. If his team wins because of him, not despite him, Corral’s draft stock will get a big boost. For many, he is already the best quarterback in this class.

Too careless handling of the ball would be punished immediately by the front seven around the versatile and athletic DeMarvin Leal. The powerful Leal has everything to be considered for the first round in the draft. For him it is therefore also a career-defining game.

Texas A&M should play a game plan against the offense designed by Lane Kiffin and executed by Matt Corral, which relies on patience, physique and avoidance of mistakes. The fewer opportunities Ole Miss has, the higher the Aggies’ chances of winning. The winner is given a ticket to the Sugar Bowl or even to the playoffs. The loser has to be satisfied with the citrus bowl, which is also played on New Years but receives much less attention.

Other draft prospects: Texas A&M Aggies WR Ainias Smith, TE Jalen Wydermyer, iOL Kenyon Green; Ole Miss Rebels Edge Sam Williams
