MT. PLEASANT, Michigan – The Ohio field hockey team (5-6) dominated the Chippewas of Central Michigan (1-12) Friday (Oct. 13) by a score of 5-0. This was the Bobcats’ largest ever win against the Chippewas and second shutout of the season, after they won 7-0 against Longwood Sept. 29.
Overall, the Bobcats recorded 22 total shots, with 16 coming on target. The Bobcats received 10 penalty corners and eight saves. The defense held the Chippewas to eight shots and five corners.
Individually, the Bobcats were lead by freshman Pauline Hartlieb (Leverkusen, Germany) and fifth year Katelyn Whittle (Glenwood, Md.), who both tallied two goals in the game.
Senior goalkeeper Macy Lotze (Louisville, Ky.) played the first 45 minutes of game time, allowing zero goals and making five saves. Lotze’s passionate effort lead the Bobcats to a five-goal lead, when sophomore goalkeeper Gwen Hershberger (Harrison City, Pa.) came into the game. Hershberger tallied three saves and let in zero goals in her 15 minutes played.
The Bobcats’ offense got to work early in the first quarter. In the fifth minute, Pauline Hartlieb found the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season, second on the team. The Bobcats mounted pressure, having five total shots with three on target, along with three corners. The Bobcats’ defense held the Chippewas to zero shots and zero corners in the first. The Bobcats’ lead would remain one into the second.
The Bobcats’ offense went back to work early, firing shots on the Chippewas net. In the 25th minute, the Bobcats were awarded a penalty corner. Shots came flying after saves were made, but eventually junior Merle Kal (Haarlem, The Netherlands) was able to send a shot past the Chippewa goalie. The goal was Kal’s first of the season and her sixth point. The Bobcats’ defense continued to not allow pressure, only allowing the first corner in the 28th minute.
Even with the Bobcats up two at the half, the Bobcats dominated on both offense and defense. In the first half, the Bobcats offense had 14 shots, 10 on goal, and five corners. The Bobcats defense did not allow a single shot, and only allowed one corner. It was the first time all season the Bobcats had not allowed a single shot in a respective half.
Within the first minute of the third quarter, Hartlieb notched her second goal of the game, and sixth of the season. The goal was assisted by junior Noa Desmaretz (Antwerp, Belgium), her first assist of the season ad her fifth point. Only five minutes later, the Bobcats’ leading scorer Whittle scored her 11th goal of the season, which set her career high for goals in a season. After Hartlieb and Whittle’s goals, the Bobcats held a four goal lead. But, Whittle was not done for the quarter, as she dispatched her second of the game and 12th of the season in the 43rd minute to balloon the Bobcat lead to five. Whittle’s second of the game brought her to joint-top of the MAC in total goals scored.
With a five-goal lead to start the fourth, Hershberger came into the game and made a pair of stops early. The defense remained stout, limiting the Chippewa attack. The Bobcats had a goal ruled off from a penalty corner, but that did not cease the pressure. The Bobcats were unable to score, but won by a margin of 5-0. It was the Bobcats’ second largest win of the season, and brought their MAC record to 3-2.
