[OSEN=잠실, 한용섭 기자] Professional baseball LG Twins bullpen pitcher Ham Deok-ju undergoes elbow surgery again.
The LG club announced on the 16th, “On the 19th, Ham Deok-ju will undergo surgery to remove pins and bone spurs for fractures of the left elbow at the Cheongdam Lion Orthopedic Surgery Clinic in Seoul.”
An LG official said, “Ham Deok-ju will undergo surgery again on the area where he had surgery last January. After the season ended, he went to three domestic hospitals and Japan’s Minami Hospital for checkups, and it was found that surgery to remove pins and shave the upper jaw was necessary. He explained, “It is expected that rehabilitation will take about six months because the bone needs to fill in the area where the pin was removed.”
Ham Deok-ju underwent elbow surgery last January. The injury suffered in the second half of the 2023 season got worse as he played in the Korean Series without fully recovering. The patient underwent left elbow pinning surgery due to a microfracture of the olecranon bone of the left elbow.
After rehabilitation, he returned to the first team in mid-August. Ham Deok-ju appeared in 15 games (11⅔ innings) this season and recorded an ERA of 5.40 with 1 loss and 3 holds.
Ham Deok-ju, who joined Doosan in 2013, was traded to LG ahead of the 2021 season. At that time, LG made a 2-for-2 trade, sending infielder Yang Seok-hwan and pitcher Nam Ho to Doosan and bringing in Ham Deok-ju and Chae Ji-seon.
Ham Deok-ju could not play properly in 2021 and 2022 due to injuries. He left the team in early May 2021 due to a bone fragment injury in his elbow, underwent rehabilitation for about four months, and returned in September. After 16 games, 1 win, 2 losses, and 1 hold, he recorded an ERA of 4.29 and underwent surgery to remove bone fragments from his elbow after the season. In 2022, while he was moving down to the second team in early May and preparing to become a starting pitcher, he was unable to pitch properly due to an injury. He recorded an ERA of 2.13 in 13 games with no wins or losses, and did not return to the first team until the end of the season.
Last year, Deok-Ju Ham played a big role in the bullpen to help LG win the championship for the first time in 29 years. Appearing in 57 games (55 ⅔ innings), he recorded 4 wins, undefeated, 4 saves, 16 holds, and an ERA of 1.62. He suffered an elbow injury at the end of August and underwent rehabilitation until the end of the regular season. In the Korean Series held in November, he pitched in 4 games (3 ⅓ innings) and contributed to the championship with 1 win and an ERA of 2.70.
Ham Deok-ju, who qualified as a free agent after the Korean Series, signed a four-year contract with LG worth a total of 3.8 billion won (down payment of 600 million won, annual salary of 1.4 billion won, and incentive of 1.8 billion won). With a contract with a 37% option, the club established safety measures.
