Renée Lariviere (24) from Ontario in Canada was only going to drive her group of friends to McDonald’s for dinner when things suddenly went wrong, writes the news agency Kennedy News and Media.
When one of her friends threw the car key to her just before she was about to get into the car, and in the attempt to accept, she stabbed herself with the key. Improbably, it burrowed deep into her cheek.
– My friend looked at me and shouted: “Oh, my God, keep calm!”, says the 24-year-old.
Argued with wife – woke up like this
Lariviere herself did not understand how serious it was until she saw herself in the mirror.
– I felt a constant pressure, but it just felt like I had been punched in the face. It was probably because the adrenaline makes you feel no pain. I actually didn’t believe him, so I went to the bathroom to look at myself in the mirror, she explains.
When she saw the key stuck in the skin between her eyes and nose, her first thought was that she was going to go blind.
– Couldn’t believe it
In full panic, the group of friends called for an ambulance, which rushed their friend to hospital.
There she took a CT, before a surgeon got the key out and stitched up the deep wound.
X-rays show that the sharp key penetrated deep into the 24-year-old’s left nasal cavity.
Lariviere claims that the doctors must have been very fascinated by the bloody injury, which must be said to be of the rare kind. Now the photos are being used as an example that “anything can happen”, according to the young woman.
– The doctors were very surprised. They came from other departments to see, because they couldn’t believe it. One of them asked if he could take pictures and show them to his students. He worked as an emergency doctor, and wanted to show them that anything can happen, she explains.
– I’m not a gold digger
– Was terrified
Fortunately, the 24-year-old got away with his sight intact. Amazingly, she also suffered no scarring after doctors patched her cheek back together.
– I couldn’t care less about getting a scar. They can go away if you get the right treatment. What I worried about was whether I was going to go blind, she says and adds:
– I never lost sight, but I was terrified when they took out the key. I also feared that something would happen if I moved. But luckily that didn’t happen.
Now Lariviere encourages others to be more careful about minor accidents in everyday life:
– When I look back on it, I think that it is completely impossible that something like this could happen. What are the odds? I was also lucky, because if it had hit me somewhere else, I could have suffered major injuries.
– It was a great relief when I got answers to the CT scan and the doctors told me that everything looked fine. People should definitely be more careful. Accidents like this happen all the time, which I don’t think we understand. We are so busy living life day by day, so we don’t think about how much can happen and how much it can hurt us, she concludes.
