VIVA – Talk about heart disease, most people only know attack heart or coronary heart disease. Though, there is also congenital heart disease which is often overlooked.
Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) is a heart disease that has been present since birth due to imperfect heart formation in the early stages of fetal development in the womb.
Congenital Heart Disease Specialist, dr. Radityo Prakoso, Sp.JP(K), said 8 out of 1,000 babies were diagnosed with this congenital heart disease. However, only 30 percent show symptoms in the first weeks of life.
“The rest are not visible early in life. This results in a delay in diagnosis which can have serious consequences. In fact, 80 percent of congenital heart disease has no known cause,” he said during a media gathering at the Heartology Cardiovascular Center, which was held virtual, recently. .
