Makassar

Two refugees from Sudan and Afghanistan were beaten by a number of residents in Makassar. Both of them were beaten because they often make trouble for local residents.

Both namely, AMI (34) Sudan and AE (48) Afghanistan often make trouble on Jalan Muhajirin Makassar on Saturday (25/9/2021). Both were then secured by the Makassar Immigration Detention Center (Rudenim).

“The two refugees were secured from different locations. They are refugees who live in Indonesia, they should respect the customs and laws that apply in Indonesia,” said Head of the Makassar Rudenim, Alimuddin, through his press statement, Sunday (26/9/2021) .

AMI was secured because previously he was almost attacked by local residents who did not accept the refugees’ rude words to a community leader.

“Following up on this, his party has ordered officers to carry out further inspections, and temporarily they are placed in the Rudenim,” he explained.

Apart from AMI, one refugee was also attacked by unknown persons. He was beaten because he went berserk at his refuge.

“Refugee from Afghanistan AE (48) was secured at his guesthouse, after being beaten by some unknown people, the cause of which first hit the shelter manager,” said Alimuddin.

“Before they were taken into custody, AE and AMI were taken to the hospital by the police officers for a medical examination,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Immigration Division, Dodi Karnida, appreciated the swift action of the Head of Rudenim and staff in overcoming refugee problems. In addition, the handling of refugees has so far been carried out in collaboration with UNHCR, IOM, the Police, the local government as well as the shelter manager.

“Cooperation between stakeholders is expected to be able to handle various refugee issues, one of which is the problem of contact between refugees and local residents,” said Dodi.
