The mayor of Pazardzhik Todor Popov tells the chronology of the events of the last days from his point of view.
“I accept here the representatives of various political parties that are participating in this election campaign – another for this year, both for president and for parliament. And what’s going on. I accept Mr. Boyko Borissov, I accept Anastas Gerdjikov, I accept on Friday Mr. Mustafa Karadayi with candidates for MPs… And on Friday they make me the village police scheme, which concerns my driver’s license. On Monday, I was expecting another presidential candidate to come on this beautiful holiday – the Day of the Awakeners, but alas, police and tax officers are being sent to me instead. And for what? To collect information, 90% of which is public and which can be obtained from any website – the Agency for State Financial Inspection and the municipality. And to ask for the contract for donation of Delyan Peevski, with which he gives BGN 700,000 to the municipality in March 2020 – during a pandemic, “he told “24 hours” the mayor who is running for his fourth term.
“They hung out here, drank coffee. I don’t mind the boys, they did their job. But to spend public funds? To send 20 cars with people to pick up 5 documents, which you can send by e-mail. This is, to put it mildly, madness. The goal was to make a circus. To be covered by the media. The goal was to intimidate – me, my fellow mayors, etc. “, says Popov.
“I will not remain silent on these issues anymore, because they do not concern only me. They encroach on the local government of which we are representatives. What are these people who are attacking us? These are people who are not behind the vote. These are some service ministers, some official people. They say the others were exes. These are business people. In 20 days they will be gone. And they allow themselves to be encroached upon by us, the representatives of the local government, who are directly elected by the people. Yes, let there be checks, I’m not against that. But is this the way to do it – with demonstrativeness, ostentation, disgusting attitude “, the mayor thinks.
“I am neither the first nor the last. They performed the same circuses in at least 20 other Bulgarian municipalities. However, for a number of reasons, colleagues there did not want to go out and speak in public. This is the scheme of these people. To take back some gloomy times from decades back in time. Be afraid of who you communicate with, who you talk to. This against me is a pure form of political repression. And why? Because I have accepted candidates for deputies, I have accepted candidates for presidents and I have said directly in the eyes that in Bulgaria the economic climate is hindered by the circle of “Capital”, commented Todor Popov.
