Official: ‘Vienna attackers are radical Muslims’ | Abroad

“You can see that they can all be linked to the radical Islamist milieu,” said Franz Ruf, director of public security at the ministry.

The radicalized Muslim (20) who shot four people and injured more than twenty others in the heart of Vienna on Monday evening was killed by the police. The attack was the work of one person and was claimed by the terrorist movement Islamic State (IS).

Two suspects have also been arrested in Switzerland. Arrests may also follow in other countries, said Interior Minister Karl Nehammer. The FBI, among others, has provided “valuable” information.

The perpetrator was born in Austria but also had a North Macedonian passport. He was sentenced to 22 months in prison last year for trying to travel to Syria to join ISIS. The man was released early.

According to the Austrian authorities, this was a mistake. The government has also acknowledged that something went wrong with information about the perpetrator communicated by Slovak intelligence.
