Louis Van Gal leaves the leadership of the Dutch national team. He announced it himself at the press conference, immediately after the defeat on penalties against Argentina in the quarter-finals of the World Cup: “I won’t continue as coach of the Dutch selection, it was my last game for my third term”, he declared. “I’m very proud. I’ve called up a lot of young players, I’ve allowed them to gain experience. We’ve formed a group and, when I look back, I see something very positive. I don’t feel defeated.”
Van Gaal finally added: “I’m leaving an excellent group, a very close-knit and very technical team. I was a coach for 20 games and we have never lost. There must be a reason. Furthermore, we played against the best national teams.”
From 1 January 2023, the 71-year-old will be replaced on the bench by Ronald Kuman.
