While teachers continue to report suspected cases of Covid-19 infections in their schools, the Secretary of Education of the State government (Segey) still does not recognize this problem in the first week of the resumption of face-to-face classes in Yucatán.
In order to know officially what happens in basic education schools in the face of the constant reports of cases detected in teachers and students and the temporary suspension of work where infections arise, questions were asked to the Segey and the state government.
As a follow-up to the suspension of classes at Technical High School 44 in Xoclán, 1) What is the official report of the Segey on this case? 2) A week after the face-to-face classes, how many schools have temporarily suspended classes on suspicion of Covid-19 and what are they ?, and 3) with the internet problem that affects some schools now and with the contagion that affects others, what strategy will they use to ensure the education of children and young people?
Segey’s responses were:
1) The Technical High School 44 of Xoclán worked regularly and in accordance with the state strategy. Supervisor Isabel Alpuche was there all day today (for yesterday Friday) and reported that all staff attended.
2) In accordance with the Safe Return to School Protocol when there is a suspected case of Covid-19, the student withdraws for 14 days. When there is a confirmed case, the entire room is removed for 14 days.
3) The Safe Return to Classes Protocol contemplates a hybrid and voluntary model in face-to-face and non-face-to-face mode. In the classroom, students attend classes and the days they do not attend, they will do homework and will be able to complement their online education. In the non-face-to-face modality, the guided orientation to tutors is considered, in which the teachers work directly with the tutors at specific times and hours. As well as online education, just in case the school and the student have connectivity: live classes, use of platforms or the flipped classroom (material is sent to students so that they can study).
The response of the educational authority does not confirm whether or not there were the six cases of Covid-19 in Technique No. 44 of Xoclán Bech that forced the suspension of classes on Wednesday and Thursday, as the newspaper reporter found. On Wednesday morning the high school did not receive its students who take face-to-face classes, but the teaching and manual staff who reported the six cases of Covid among the administrative staff were there.
