Naples –
Naples moved quickly to find a replacement for Gennarro Gattuso. Naples lift Luciano Spalletti as a new coach.
Napoli sacked Gattuso after the 2020/2021 Italian League finished. Napoli dismissed the former AC Milan midfielder for failing to lead Dries Mertens et al to qualify for the Champions League.
Naples had competed for a ticket to the Champions League until the last week of the Italian League. However, the Partenopei only drew 1-1 with Hellas Verona in the last week and had to settle for finishing in fifth place which means Europa League quota.
Naples then announced the appointment Luciano Spalletti as a substitute for Gattuso, Saturday (29/5/2021). Napoli tied the former AS Roma and Udinese coach with a contract until June 2023 and a fee of 3.5 million euros per year.
“I am pleased to announce that Luciano Spalletti will be the coach of Napoli on July 1,” Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis said on the club’s official website.
“Welcome, Luciano, we’ll do a great job together.”
Before being appointed as a coach Naples, Luciano Spalletti is unemployed. The 62-year-old coached Inter Milan from 2017 before being sacked in May 2019.
