Benfica made Luís Castro official this Thursday as the new coach of the B team.
The 42-year-old coached the under-23s of the Reds, but he also led the youth team to the unprecedented achievement of the UEFA Youth League last season, in addition to reaching another final of the competition in 2019/20.
Luís Castro has been at Benfica since 2019 and extended his relationship with the club until 2024.
“It’s a huge pride! I joined Benfica two and a half years ago with the mission of helping in the process and enhancing players for the first team. It is a sign that the work so far has been very well done, this commitment to me makes me proud and what I can promise is that I will give my best”, he told the club’s bodies, after signing a contract, alongside President Rui Coast.
The coach, who succeeds António Oliveira, reinforced the importance of already knowing «the club’s work dynamics», as well as some players who play in the II League for the secondary formation of the reds.
«It is a huge advantage, because there will be no adaptation phase, it is to continue walking, knowing that the main objective is the first team, is to serve Benfica and continue at that pace», he added.
Paulo Lopes (assistant coach), Jorge Cordeiro (assistant coach), Vítor Dimas (goalkeeper coach) and João Francisco Silva (analyst coach) accompany Luís Castro in the transition from under-23 to the B team, which starts the pre-season. season to June 27.
