London, Oct 3 (EFE).- The second part of the official investigation into the covid pandemic in the United Kingdom began this Tuesday, with the mission of examining the decisions made by the Conservative Government and other authorities to confront the crisis.
This independent investigation, commissioned by the Executive itself, is chaired by former judge of the British Court of Appeals Heather Hallett, who already analyzed in a first phase to what extent the country was prepared for the health emergency.
In inaugurating this second stage, composed of 35 sessions until December 14, Hallett has indicated that the testimony of representatives of the families who lost relatives will be heard; people with disabilities; workers in the health sector and those suffering from chronic covid, as well as politicians, scientists, unions and social care organizations.
Regarding the testimony of those affected, he said that “they will allow the decision-making to be contextualized and will help determine to what extent those who made them took into account the interests of said groups and their impact on them.”
The former judge examines the period from January 2020 to February 2022, when the last restrictions were lifted, and will have access to the WhatsApp messages that were exchanged at critical moments between members of the Government, including the then Prime Minister, Boris Johnson. .
The High Court forced the Executive to facilitate these communications, which Johnson has already done, although the current Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak – who at the time was head of the Economy – alleges that he did not save those messages on the various phones he had.
Hallett’s investigation into the management of a pandemic that caused more than 226,000 deaths in the United Kingdom will not find blame, but will instead issue recommendations to improve the system, although the Government is not obliged to adopt them.
In a third and fourth phase, it will analyze the impact of Covid on the health system and the treatments that were offered, such as antivirals or vaccines, in addition to specific aspects such as the impact on nursing homes or the State’s purchase of healthcare equipment. personal protection.
The perspectives of the regions of Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland, which are themselves carrying out their own inquiry, will also be examined.
