Official delivery of the presidential program Bono Cafetalero

Tegucigalpa- The “Coffee Bonus for fertilization in support of small and medium producers” is a program implemented by the Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock SAG, executed by the Undersecretary of Coffee Growing, with the aim of supporting small and medium coffee producers, whose production report ranges between 0.01 QQ to 150 QQ/oros duly registered in the IHCAFE, corresponding to the harvest period (2022-2023).

Each year the program aims to support small and medium-sized producers. By 2024, a goal was set to benefit 97,549 coffee growers through the delivery of 257,952 quintals of coffee formula in 226 municipalities in the 15 coffee-producing departments.

One of the program’s objectives is to improve the income of coffee-growing families by supporting fertilization, as well as providing comprehensive training, capacity building and other inputs to strengthen farms and generate added value, contributing to the production and promotion of national coffee growing.

The department of Santa Barbara is located in the northwestern part of Honduras. Its territorial extension is 5024 km² and its population until 2017, according to INE data, is 434,896 inhabitants, its political division consists of 28 municipalities, 313 villages and 1128 hamlets. Its main product is coffee and it is produced in 27 of the 28 municipalities of the department, its statistical data in the 2022-2023 harvest was 599,462.47 quintals of gold.

The municipality of San Luis Santa Barbara is located in the northwest of the department, its territorial extension is 381.3 km² and its population for 2018 according to INE data was 23,200 inhabitants, it consists of 17 villages and 185 hamlets. According to data provided by the IHCAFE in San Luis there are around 1,120 producers registered in the database for the 2022-2023 harvest, which produce 44,653.08 quintals of gold.

The first official delivery was chosen to take place in the municipality of San Luis, Santa Barbara, due to the strong commitment of its local government to the promotion and development of the coffee sector. Local authorities, especially the municipal mayor, who belongs to the LIBRE party, actively support all initiatives that benefit producers.

In addition, San Luis has shown a notable increase in coffee production year after year. This year, 800,000 coffee plants are ready to be planted in at least 286 blocks of coffee plantations, which will be renovated with genetically improved varieties. AND
