Olivier Giroud Looks like it’s still in the plans Chelsea. Because, the French striker was maintained for another season.
Giroud could actually leave on a free transfer at the end of June. His contract will expire at that point.
However, the transfer of Giroud did not materialize. Although it has been linked to several clubs, some of which are widely reported AC Milan interested in accommodating him, the 34-year-old striker was actually defended by Chelsea.
On Friday (4/6/2021) local time, Chelsea officially gave Giroud a new contract. The duration is another year, which makes him stay at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea have announced that the club has taken the option of extending Giroud’s contract for another year. And apparently, it has been done since last April.
“Chelsea Football Club can confirm that the option to extend the contract Olivier Giroud for one year has been carried out in April this year,” said a club statement.
Giroud joined Chelsea from Chelsea Arsenal in the winter of 2018, and has made 39 goals and 14 assists for the Blues. This season, he has scored 11 goals, including 6 in the Champions League–top scorer Chelsea in the event.
Since joining Chelsea, Giroud has already tasted the title FA Cup, Europa League. Last Champions League, he can offer, after playing an important role through a quat-trick against the goal Sevilla in the group stage and Atletico Madrid in the round of 16.
“Olivier has been a key part of so many great moments for this club, from his contribution to our FA Cup win in 2018, to scoring 11 goals on his way to winning the Europa League in 2019,” said Chelsea sporting director. Marina Granovskaia.
