The Italian talent became famous at the end of last year, when it turned out that he would be promoted to F2, bypassing F3. Although his results in the series are not entirely convincing, since the announcement of Lewis Hamilton’s big move to Ferrari, he has been mentioned as one of the candidates to drive for Mercedes.
Toto Wolff of course initially put the brakes on such suggestions, but it quickly became clear that he wanted to make a bold move – as Red Bull did with Max Verstappen – and give him a lightning-fast chance in F1. This was confirmed at his home in Monza, and Antonelli will become a full-time driver for the Silver Arrows in 2025.
The announcement was made despite the 18-year-old’s Friday slip-up. Wolff, however, has defended his protégé in a strong manner, and today Mercedes has confirmed its belief in his talent. In 2025, Antonelli will of course be George Russell’s partner:
“It’s an incredible feeling to be announced as a Mercedes driver alongside George Russell for the 2025 season. Ever since I was a little boy, it’s been my dream to get to Formula 1. I want to thank the team for all the support they’ve given me so far and for believing in me,” said Kimi.
“I still have a lot to learn, but I feel ready for this opportunity. I will be focused on getting better and delivering the best results for the team. I am also excited to be George’s teammate.”
“He came through the junior programme like I did and I have a lot of respect for him. He is incredibly fast, has won multiple Grand Prix races and has already helped me develop as a driver. I am looking forward to learning from him and working together on the track.”
Mercedes’ announcement puts an end to all discussions about another seat in F1 for the 2025 season. Apart from internal reshuffles at Red Bull, the only unknown is the second seat at Sauber/Audi. Of the current field, only Valtteri Bottas has a good chance, and a lot of not-so-obvious drivers are linked to him, such as Liam Lawson and Gabriel Bortoleto.
