Machado, with the support of his party, led the campaign of the opposition member of the largest opposition coalition, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutiawho, according to the National Electoral Council (CNE)came second in the presidential elections behind the ruling party and president Nicolas Maduroby a difference of 704,114 votes, when there were still more than two million votes to be counted and whose fate is still unknown.
