Office buildings, schools and shops are increasingly being converted into homes. Last year, 12,500 new homes were built in this way. The previous year there were 12,200. This is evident from figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) on Thursday.
The so-called transformation homes accounted for nearly 13 percent of new homes last year. Almost half of these homes are built in former offices. A quarter are homes that have been realized in shops or “social real estate”, such as hospitals, schools or churches.
Most of the transformation homes realized last year ended up in the private rental sector, owned by companies or investors. It usually concerns small houses. 45 percent has an area between 15 and 50 square meters, while 28 percent covers 50 to 75 square meters.
Last year, Rotterdam had the most new transformation homes of all municipalities, followed by Amsterdam and The Hague. The three major cities are absolute numbers. Relatively speaking, Capelle aan den IJssel had the most. Three quarters of the new homes belonged to this segment.
