Officer in India rapes girl (13) who reports gang rape

The drama took place in Lalitpur in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. The chief officer has been arrested, Reuters news agency reported. Three others have also been arrested for raping the girl. “We will take tough action against those who have committed this,” said a senior police officer.

Kidnapped and raped

The girl turned herself in to the police station and said she had been kidnapped by four men who also allegedly raped her. After a few days she was able to escape and managed to reach the police station. So instead of helping her, she was raped again. The victim is in hospital.

Women’s rights are under severe pressure in India. This new low is provoking anger among politicians and activists in the country. “If even police stations are no longer safe for women, where are they?” asks politician Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

In 2012, there was worldwide outcry about a rape case of a woman on a bus† That brought to light a wave of reports of gang rapes. This eventually led to the law in India becoming stricter. In 2018, the death penalty was introduced for raping girls under the age of 12.

Despite the stricter laws, the number of attacks on women remains high. The most recent figures are from 2020 when nearly 32,000 rapes or attempted rapes were reported.
