Officer helps woman give birth

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Alabama – An Alabama deputy is being honored after helping a woman deliver a baby inside her home.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Jeremy Barbin was working a crime scene when a man ran up to him asking for help because his girlfriend was in active labor inside their home.

When Barbin and the man arrived at the home, he immediately stepped in to help deliver the baby and then took her to the hospital.

“When we entered the home, we noticed the woman was already in active labor,” Barbin said. “We sprang into action to help deliver the baby and safely unwrap the umbilical cord from around the baby’s neck.”

The sheriff’s office said they don’t normally receive training on how to deliver a baby. However, deputies are trained to be prepared for any situation.

Barbin said he is always honored to serve in any capacity he may have.

“Every day is different for our unit and you never know what can happen,” he said. “I’m thankful that we were in the right place at the right time to help deliver this baby safely and bring relief to both mom and dad.”

Sheriff Mark Pettway said he is honored to have sergeants like Barbin as part of his office.

“Sergeant Barbin went above and beyond the call of duty and put himself in a situation where he could have easily overwhelmed another person,” Sheriff Pettway said. “He demonstrated his unwavering commitment to preserving life at a critical time.”

For his work, Barbin will receive the Lifesaving Medal on Friday.
