Offenses, Juvenile Delinquency Statistics Norway: High proportion of 14-year-olds charged with violence and ill-treatment

Last year, almost 300,000 offenses were investigated in Norway. This is a small increase compared to the last three years. But 14-year-olds stand out.

– 14-year-olds stand out very much in 2020, says criminologist Reid Jone Stene, to Aftenposten.

He is responsible for statistics on offenses in Statistics Norway (SSB).

Among the perpetrators in 2020, we find 3,055 children who committed crimes before they turned 15 years old. Half of these were 14 years old, and almost a third were 13 years old when the incident occurred, shows the Statistics Norway figures.

The age group 14 years has for a long time had the most accused for both damage and theft. This applies in particular to the less serious offenses, such as shoplifting. But in the last three years, this also applies to the crime group violence and abuse.

– 14-year-olds make up a small proportion of all those arrested for offenses. But the special thing is that if you look at each age group, then the highest proportion is registered as perpetrators of both damage, theft, violence and abuse and sexual offenses among 14-year-olds, says Stene in Statistics Norway.
