Offenbacher Kreuz Distance Violations: Fines, Points in Flensburg, and Driving Bans Revealed by Frankfurt Police

The Frankfurt police carried out distance measurements on the A3 at the Offenbacher Kreuz and awarded fines and points in Flensburg.

Offenbach – If “sleep for another five minutes” suddenly turns into a quarter of an hour in the morning, punctuality can become a problem. It seems tempting to make up for lost time on the motorway. However, anyone who no longer pays attention to the necessary distance when under stress and time pressure or resorts to risky overtaking maneuvers not only endangers themselves, but also those around them.

The Frankfurt police went after “distance violators” on the A3 at the Offenbacher Kreuz on Sunday (September 24th). As an interface between the A661 and A3 motorways and the B3 federal highway, the Offenbacher Kreuz in the Rhine-Main area is one of the busiest motorway intersections in Germany. The A661 and the B3 sometimes play an important role in commuter traffic to Frankfurt. Drivers can sometimes take the A3 to Cologne, Würzburg or Frankfurt Airport.

Offenbacher Kreuz: Driving bans and points in Flensburg after distance violations

343 distance violations, 32,165 euros in fines and warnings and 304 points in Flensburg – that is the balance sheet of the distance measurements on the A3 at the Offenbacher Kreuz by the Frankfurt police. Equipped with special measuring devices, officers were able to monitor traffic from above and detect violations. Motorway bridges, for example, are suitable for such measurements, writes Bintu Lond, press spokesman for the Frankfurt am Main police headquarters.

When asked, Lond said that a large number of violations were discovered on September 24th. For some road users, the distance was so small that they would now face a fine of at least 320 euros, two points on the driving fitness register in Flensburg and a two-month driving ban.

Offenbacher Kreuz: In an emergency, no time to go from the accelerator to the brake pedal

For example, a road user at a speed of 177 km/h followed the person in front at a distance of 14.5 meters. The calculated reaction path alone is around 53 meters at this speed, writes Lond. Another was speeding along the motorway at 195 km/h and only kept a distance of around 18 meters. The average reaction time in this case is around 59 meters.

The result would almost certainly be a traffic accident with very high levels of personal injury and property damage.

In an emergency, after the shock, there isn’t even time to change your foot from the accelerator to the brake pedal, explains Lond. The result was a traffic accident with serious injuries and extensive property damage. “Such an accident not only leads to self-harm, but unfortunately also to other road users.”

Tips from the Frankfurt police on keeping your distance on the motorway

Even in driving school, half the speedometer value is taught as a guideline for the necessary distance, writes Lond. “At a speed of 100 km/h, a minimum distance of 50 meters from the vehicle in front should be maintained – a simple method for ensuring the necessary safety distance.”

“At a speed of 100 km/h, a minimum distance of 50 meters from the vehicle in front should be maintained.

An alternative method, especially on federal highways, is to use the two-second rule. Lond recommends that road users could use guide posts on the edge of the road as a guide. If the car has arrived at the fixed point in front of you, it should take at least two seconds to reach it.

Frankfurt Police: Extend your safety distance in snow, rain or slippery conditions

However, both variants would only apply on dry roads, writes Lond. In the event of snow, rain or slippery conditions, the safety distance must be adjusted to the circumstances.

Due to the weather, the Frankfurt police caused an accident themselves on Wednesday morning (October 25th) while driving in the city center with blue lights flashing. Five police officers were injured in the accident in the patrol car – two of them seriously.
