The weather experts are bringing back memories of the hot summer of 2003. The forecast indicates an omega situation – with pleasant temperatures but no rain.
Offenbach – The sun dominates the sky over the Rhein-Main area. This also remains in the week starting Monday (June 12) around Offenbach the case. This is good news for the summer feeling. But there is also a dark side behind the sunshine.
Because it should remain dry across the board in the coming days. “Hesse is on the southern flank of an extensive high-pressure area over Scandinavia. Dry and warm mainland air is increasingly flowing in from the east,” say the weather experts from the German Weather Service (DWD) in Offenbach. For the Rhine-Main area, that means plenty of sun, 14 to 16 hours of sunshine a day – but without cooling down.
Weather: Temperatures in Offenbach around 30 degrees – “Nothing falls down from the sky”
According to the forecast of the DWD, the temperatures in the coming days around Offenbach will continue to scratch the 30 degree mark, at higher altitudes in the Rhine-Main area the thermometer will settle around 20 degrees. “The heat will not be the problem in the coming days. The temperatures remain in the pleasant range,” says meteorologist Dominik Jung from wetter.net.

The big and growing problem is drought. “In Germany, almost nothing falls from the sky,” says Jung, basing his forecast on an American weather model. Short showers or thunderstorms are possible in some areas, but would not compensate for the lack of rain. The people in Offenbach and the Rhine-Main area have been waiting for the badly needed rain for days.
As in the hot summer of 2003: Omega situation is imminent
And after 20 years, a weather phenomenon could repeat itself in its most serious form. “Next week the dreaded OMEGA weather conditions will even begin to build up. This weather situation brought Europe, among other things, the extremely hot summer of 2003,” the meteorologists from wetter.net report. A powerful high over western and central Europe is flanked by two lows – “The Classic Omega Weather Pattern. The great heat isn’t there at first, but the big problem remains the lack of precipitation,” says Jung.
As much as people are happy about the hours of sunshine and the many leisure opportunities around Offenbach, the drought is gradually becoming more critical for the soil and agriculture. In addition: As in the past few days, the risk of forest and meadow fires in the Rhine-Main area is high – currently at levels 3 and 4 of 5. (esa)
