The popular Offenbach harbor staircase is accessible again after weeks of corona-related closure.

The city of Offenbach has released the harbor staircase at Hafenplatz, which has been closed for weeks due to the corona pandemic. The barriers were dismantled on Thursday. The city’s press office justified the move on request with the relaxed contact restrictions imposed by the state of Hesse: Since the catering sector may also reopen on the square, it is hoped that the audience there will in future be distributed more generously than in recent weeks.

The blocking of the extremely popular harbor staircase had repeatedly caused criticism: Most recently, the Offenbach artist and designer Lutz Jahnke drew attention to the blocking with a protest.

The port area borders directly on Offenbach’s Nordend, where there are particularly few squares and parks – while at the same time squatting close together: Almost 13,000 people live in just 0.7 square kilometers.
