The new construction of a two-class primary school at IGS Lindenfeld is expected to cost around 29 million euros. Two construction phases are planned.

Four primary school classes are already being taught at the Integrated Comprehensive School (IGS) Lindenfeld. In the coming years there should be a total of eight. As of August next year, the city of Offenbach plans to build a new building on the grounds of the IGS, the former Bach School, in Friedrichsstrasse and thus “take pressure off the system”, as Thomas Löhr, head of the municipal education department, calls it.

The number of schoolchildren has been increasing sharply for several years. While 1242 children were enrolled in school in 2010, 1494 are expected in the coming year. The city expects costs of 29.1 million euros for the new building and the cafeteria; Trades that should be completed by 2026. Annual cost increases of around four percent and ten percent for the unforeseen are already factored in.

In February, 24.1 million euros were assumed. “During the further planning, we found other things in the ground that need to be renovated: drainage, sewage and supply lines,” explains project manager Xenia Kooiker. For the renovation of the existing lines alone, 2.3 million euros would be due, added planning, construction and school department head Paul Gerhard Weiß (FDP). In the course of the planning process, the decision was also made to enlarge the cafeteria. It was originally only intended for primary school children, but now it could also be used by IGS students who are currently eating in the nearby senior citizens’ center if necessary.

The pandemic also added new requirements for ventilation systems, such as window-independent ventilation. The city will seek funding for the energetic renovation, between 1.2 and 1.6 million euros are possible. For ventilation systems up to 500,000 euros.

Two construction phases are planned for the three-storey reinforced concrete structure, including the outdoor area. In the first section, the old caretaker’s house will be demolished and then the construction of the west wing and the northern front building on Friedensstrasse will begin. In the second construction phase, the daycare building will be demolished and the primary school will be completed with the construction of the east wing. Work on the new daycare center not far from the previous location is already underway.

In order to provide space for the coming years, containers must be set up on the grounds of the gymnasium during the construction phases. When the first phase of construction is finished, the children can move into the rooms, says Weiß.
