Offenbach: Loyal fans should save the Hafen 2 cultural center

In order to survive the Corona year with its limitations, the Offenbach cultural center Hafen 2 has started a long-term donation campaign.

At least the sheep and chickens look like they are having a good time – in summery weather you have a large part of the outdoor area at the Offenbach cultural center Hafen 2 to yourself. However, while the corona restrictions give the animals an unusually calm spring between the construction trailer, concert hall and Main, those responsible are worried: Since Port 2 has no reserves, the closure is indefinitely “existential,” says Alex Braun, who is Port 2 16 years ago with his partner Andrea Weiß. They now want to save the cultural center with a donation campaign.

In the past four weeks, fans have donated almost 41,000 euros on several platforms on the Internet. Many contributed 20 or 50 euros, some more. Well-known people – among them the director of the German Architecture Museum, Peter Cachola-Schmal – are among the names of those who have donated publicly on the “Gofundme” platform. “The port is one of my favorite oases, hold on, we can do it together!” Writes a donor who gave 100 euros.

Support

Port 2 is supported by the Suesswasser e.V. association and the Café im Hafen 2 (GbR). Together they finance the cultural center.

In 2013, port 2 moved from a hall at the port, which was demolished due to the ongoing development, into a new building at the western end of the port, near the Kaiserlei bridge.

As of yesterday, just under 41,000 euros have already been received at port 2.

If you want to donate, you can do so at gofundme.com/f/hafen-schultern. More information about the campaign can be found here: hafen2.net/45-0-SPENDEN.html.

“The response to the call for donations is very good,” says Andrea Weiß and adds: “Hopefully it won’t let up.” Because even if there are currently no bands to pay and some working students are not employed, the normal wages and rent that goes to Offenbacher Stadtwerke continues. Almost 30,000 euros a month would have to be lifted even without public activity – the details can be found in a table on the net, with which the port team would like to create transparency.

In order to clarify the dimensions, Alex Braun tells of the 20,000 euros in state emergency aid that Port 2 received: “We used it to pay an open invoice,” he says – “and then the money was gone again” . Port 2, which started operating as an alternative cultural center on the port site in 2004 and moved to a new building west of the port basin in 2013, has long since become a socio-cultural cultural center valued far beyond the borders of Offenbach. A place with live music, parties and films that also positions itself politically. At the entrance, the words “Dissolve Camp Moria, distribute people in Europe.”

The open-air cinema in an amphitheater directly on the Main is particularly popular: it attracted over 13,000 people in 2019, with net sales of EUR 112,000. But where else people usually sit comfortably on blankets and see freighter programs flocking in front of the backdrop, the grass is now growing. The fact that at the beginning of the season, of all things, the revenue ceases to exist, prompted Weiß & Co. to put the donation campaign on a long-term basis – until the end of the year. Because with the summer income, the winter is financed. And that won’t work in 2020.

The port festival on February 22 was still well attended.

You had to help yourself with donations: in the early 10s, when the 830,000 euro new building had to be financed: 230,000 euros came together. To motivate them to continue donating, the team publishes a photo of an employee every week Employee. You can see a piece of bare shoulder, on which the donation status is written. “Shoulder shoulders” is next to the photo in the latest newsletter. And: “No port without you.”
