The ice rink planned for mid-January on the Offenbacher Aliceplatz has been canceled. According to the city administration, the reason is the development of the pandemic and the spreading omicron variant. “We very much regret this decision, because with this offer we also wanted to make a contribution to the revitalization of Offenbach city center after the already difficult Christmas business”, said Mayor Felix Schwenke (SPD). Because of the Omikron variant, it is “completely unclear” how the situation will develop in January. According to Schwenke, the action with the ice rink would only have made sense if the city had also called for people to come to Offenbach for a visit to the ice rink and for shopping. This is currently “not responsible”. The original plan was to transform Aliceplatz into a 300 square meter ice rink between January 11 and 22.
The ice rink is part of the “Inner City Future Concept”, the aim of which is to create incentives to visit the inner city. In addition to the ice rink, a “beach club” was also planned, which had to be canceled due to the pandemic. According to the city, the ice rink will be implemented in winter 2023. jon
