Offenbach “We feel at the mercy of the pandemic,” write student representatives from the Theodor Heuss School and call for more protection from the corona virus.
In an open letter, students from the Theodor Heuss School demand better protection against corona infections. “We don’t want to be treated like guinea pigs in the second corona wave,” says the letter, which is addressed to the state education authority and the city’s health department, among other things. When so many people are together in such a small space every day, masks can only provide limited protection. “We feel vulnerable to the pandemic”.
The authors call for an immediate change between face-to-face and distance teaching at the vocational school, i.e. homeschooling. That would make it possible to reduce the size of the classes. that minimum distances could be observed. Finally, the Robert Koch Institute recommends reducing classes from a 7-day incidence of 50 (in Offenbach, the incidence on Friday was almost 255). The letter is signed “on behalf of the students” by head boy Gulsher Gharwal and co-author Kevin Schmidt.
Health department overloaded
According to Schmidt, the initiative for the letter came from the high school graduate; There are particularly many contacts there because of the course system. And every infected person carries the disease home to their parents. There is a lot of ventilation in the classes, says Schmidt, but now it’s getting colder. “You can’t do your class work with gloves on,” he says. “They are simply not doing us a favor”. There had been a Covid case at the school last week, but classmates had not been tested. Among other things, there is “no need to follow up” because of the mask requirement, said the city health department.
In general, it is questionable whether the city would have the capacity for it. A few days ago the magistrate announced that “the health department can no longer guarantee the important follow-up of contacts in many cases”. Infection chains have to be broken, especially in people at risk, says the message.
