Offenbach begins the rehabilitation of the main dam

NoThe renovation of the Offenbach main dam, which has been planned for more than a decade, is also due to start this month. According to the city, the start will be in the Rumpenheim district. Downtown-level redevelopment between the Innovation Campus, a former Clariant site, and the Carl Ulrich Bridge will follow in 2024 and 2025. To improve flood protection, sheet piles are to be driven into the ground up to eight meters deep. Explosive ordnance experts have to penetrate so deep into the ground to look for bombs and other dangerous remnants of the Second World War, which keep popping up in Offenbach.

In the project approval notice, the Darmstadt regional council stipulated that the work can only be carried out in smaller sections due to the constant risk of flooding. The approximately 550-metre dam in the Rumpenheim resort will therefore be renovated in five sections, as the city further explains. In order to be able to withstand an extreme flood, statistically predictable every 200 years, the dam must be raised up to half a meter, as previous studies have shown. The frequently used ferry connection to and from Maintal will remain active while the works are starting. The Mainradweg will be diverted.
