From the extensive park to the narrow alley – Gerhard Melzer walked 1,170 kilometers all over Graz, discovering a fascinating variety off the beaten path: “It’s really exciting to see what’s in the hidden nooks and crannies of the city “There’s something to see in the city.”

And in doing so, Gerhard Melzer encountered not only idyll and splendor but also the ugly: “I also walked through areas where one would actually like to demolish things – especially the many new buildings that are now being built, which is not always a feast for the eyes.”

Author also went through his own life

In doing so, the author gained a new image of Graz, always surprised by the bizarre or critical and tongue-in-cheek graffiti.

“Walking also has something to do with ‘going through life’ – so I wanted to tell you a little bit about my life and my path through life.” This also includes today’s Maria Caesar Park, where Gerhard Melzer’s parents went when they went home -Reich calls from the Nazis had come from Bukovina, “and here they spent their first time in Graz in the Liebenau camp.”

This is how Melzer’s life began in Graz, which the author and long-time director of the Franz Nabl Institute and the Graz Literaturhaus traces in the volume “Off to Graz”. And the author is sure – only those who walk can see the mice: “The mice are the seemingly trivial things, the little things, the quirky things – you only see them when you are traveling more slowly.” The book is also an invitation to Deceleration and an incentive to “go to Graz” yourself.
