Ofcom Proposal: Age Verification for Internet Pornography

Currently, many websites simply put an invitation to untick that the user has reached the age of 18, but no one checks whether this information is true.

“Ofcom” proposes to use several ways by which service providers could make sure that the user is indeed at least 18 years old.

For example, websites might ask you to upload a copy of your passport. One of the solutions would be to use face scanning technology, with the help of which it is possible to distinguish the face of an adult from the face of a child.

It would be the duty of pornography websites to ensure compliance with the rules. Otherwise, they will face a ban on operating in the UK or a fine of up to 10% of the turnover.

Porn industry representatives criticize the strict restrictions and warn that they will drive porn users away from trusted websites and into darker corners of the Internet, where content is much less controlled.

Privacy advocates have also expressed concern about the plan to collect data on porn users on a large scale, which could fall into the wrong hands and be used for blackmail.

Defenders of children’s rights, however, emphasize that the easy availability of Internet pornography is a serious problem that must be urgently addressed, as pornography has a negative effect on children’s psyche and understanding of healthy sexuality.

Research data shows that in Great Britain, children encounter Internet pornography for the first time at the age of 13 on average, while 27% of children have seen such materials already at the age of 11.
